Leicester’s £4 million Jubilee Square redevelopment behind schedule

Businesses in Leicester city centre were initially told that the £4 million development of Leicester’s Jubilee Square, in place of the former car park in St Nicholas’ Place, would be completed by the beginning of May 2014. However, the City’s mayor Sir Peter Soulsby is now indicating that construction work will not be complete until the end of August.

The mayor insisted that the redevelopment of the area, at the top of High Street, was always going to be a 12-month project but has suggested that the construction work is running behind schedule due to the fact that contractors had hit some unexpected problems which held up their work. Things like underground utility infrastructure that did not appear on any plans and also the fact that the area is part of the historic centre of Leicester and so virtually every shovelful of earth has had to be carefully examined by archeologists.

Local Businesses are, understandably anxious that the refurbishment of this area is completed as soon as possible and Peter Soulsby has said that, “The square will be substantially ready by the end of August when we hold our City of Festivals event, but there will have to be some tree planting afterwards.”
