Leicester based Refurbishment Stories
This week 2 stories caught our eye from the Leicester community, in relation to construction and general refurbishment:
Leicester Boxing Club Gets Refurbished
A Leicester boxing gym is being refurbished by a team of volunteers led by Stacy Cunnington, the secretary of the boxing academy in South Wigston. The gym was threatened with closure by the council unless essential roof repairs were undertaken along with other general refurbishment tasks. This prompted the local community to step in and save the day.
Initial demolition work has already started, as has roof repairs. A sum of money has been raised by locals within the community from various events which will be used to fund some of the construction materials etc. but general building tasks are being undertaken by local tradesmen who are providing their time and skills free of charge.
The boxing club opened up in 1994 and hopes to re-open it’s doors this summer and to become a hub of the community.
Keep up the good work!

University of Leicester to get a new vice-chancellor
The university of Leicester is to get a new vice-chancellor after the current one retires later this year. The new vice-chancellor, Paul Boyle was interviewed this week and said that he was inheriting a “strong estate” where much work had already been done to ensure it was highly-attractive to students. However, interestingly he said, “There may be buildings that require refurbishment or replacement but, on the whole, it’s in great shape.”
The comment reminded us to check on the current major building project being undertaken by Leicester Uni, the construction of their new Centre For Medicine on Lancaster Road. And it seems that erection of the first tower crane went ahead earlier this week.
The £42million project will result in a new state of the art academic research and teaching building. The building, designed by Associated Architects, will comprise of 3 towers (3, 4 and 5 stories) linked by glass-roofed atria, to provide additional social and break out spaces. It will be used by staff and students from the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology department of Leicester University.
